Teaching & Learning

Fostering independent learning

Long Road Sixth Form College forms an effective ‘half-way house’ between school and higher education, employment or training. You will be encouraged to take increasing responsibility for your own learning, with the support and encouragement of teaching staff.

This will involve a mixture of research tasks, working with other students to complete work, managing your time over longer projects and making full use of college resources. Our aim is that by the time you leave Long Road, you will be a confident and independent learner, able to adapt to the workplace or higher education.

During your time at Long Road Sixth Form College, you will have:

  • timetabled lessons
  • study periods in college (although we expect you to study hard at home too)
  • time to make use of our resources, in particular the Learning Resource Centre and Moodle (the Virtual Learning Environment)
  • access to subject workshops, where you can either stretch your knowledge of the subject through a range of challenging activities or else find help to get to grips with trickier areas

You will also have the opportunity to:

  • go on visits, both here and abroad, to help make your studies come to life
  • listen to interesting, and sometimes controversial, speakers
  • carry out in-depth research on subjects which interest you
  • hone your presentation and debating skills in preparation for adult life
  • gain confidence, with the help of our specialised staff if necessary, and to overcome any personal difficulties you may face
  • make lots of new friends
